The test pattern was waiting for the program that would tell you who to be.

Before the algorithm fed you what you wanted before you knew you wanted it. Before the screen autoplayed the next thing. Before the scroll had no end, there was the year 1973.

The television test pattern was not content. It was a pause. A placeholder. A promise that something might begin but only if you were patient. You adjusted the antenna, sat on the carpet, stared at the colour bars and then you waited while the world moved at the speed of a warm cathode ray tube. Nothing was instant. Nothing was disposable. If you missed a show, it was gone forever. That was the deal. This artwork shows 1973 is an appreciation for that lost slow pace. The artwork presents the test pattern not as a technical artefact, but as a relic of patience.

A memory of a time when waiting was normal and moments between programmes was not a failure of engagement, but a space for thought, bathroom breaks and ad placements.

1973 is not mourning the technology. It is mourning the ordinary.
