We traded loyalty for efficiency. For thousands of years, humanity's best friends were things we understood. The stone axe served its purpose. The wheel did not question its place. Each was a faithful servant, predictable and true. We could fix them and we could trust them. They aged with us and failed predictably, like old dogs that slow down before they stop.

Then came our new friend. Man's New Best Friend includes a robot dog not as a tool, but as a companion that does not need to be fed, does not grow tired and does not offer loyalty because it cannot choose otherwise. It is always obedient without questions and that is precisely what makes it unsettling.

The artwork asks what it means to call something a friend that has nothing to lose? Autonomous robots can learn, adapt and be reprogrammed while we sleep. It is our new best friend not because we love it, but because we have combined the reliable with the intelligent.

Man's New Best Friend is not a celebration of progress. It is a quiet mourning for the technologies that never asked to be upgraded and the quiet companionship of things that simply worked, without pretending to understand us.

We wanted a friend that would never leave. Now we have a friend that does not know the difference between loyalty and functionality.
